Program Description

Description

World Beats, curated by Garage Arts Project, is a vibrant showcase of dance and drum performances from around the world - a celebration of global rhythms and the connections we build through the arts.

The first segment features Kathak, performed by dancers from the Storytellers School of Dance in Richmond TX. Deeply rooted in a rhythmic cycle that guides the dancer’s movements, Kathak emphasizes precise and rhythmic footwork and incorporates fast turns and spins, showcasing agility and stamina.

The second segment features a unique collaboration of two beautiful dance styles from South Asia - Bharatanatyam from India and Kandyan Dance from Sri Lanka. Performed by two fantastic dancers Venugopal Josyula, from Anjali School of Dance, Sugarland TX and Saliya Ilankoon, from Salary Dance Academy, Cypress, TX, the dance is a harmonious blend of two distinct styles with rhythm as the unifying factor.

The third and final segment, is the grand finale, featuring Batalá Houston -  a community-based percussion band in Houston that plays Samba Reggae, a genre of Afro-Brazilian music known for its polyrhythms and energetic performance originating from Bahia, Brazil. Batalá Houston, is a part of a larger global percussion movement called Batalá Mundo and focuses on bringing the energy and cultural richness of this music to the greater Houston community.

Join us on May 10 for a celebration of rhythm - a coming together of ancient cultures, dance and drum styles, uniting the community to a unifying beat.
