Program Description

Description

In 2018, a forgotten piece of Sugar Land’s past was discovered - a historic cemetery where 95 individuals were buried, believed to be a part of a convict-leasing program that began in the late 1800s. Since then, efforts have been made to honor these individuals.  Learn about the background and context of this discovery, the history of convict leasing, and the ongoing efforts to identify the Sugar Land 95 individuals and memorialize the site where they are buried.  No registration required.

Park inside the gated lot (VISITOR LOT 4).  Bring your parking ticket with you inside the library to be validated by library staff.  Parking is FREE if you get your ticket validated.  Parking outside the gated lot may result in a parking violation from the University of Houston.
