Come celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month at Fulshear Branch Library! Experience a vibrant celebration of global culture.

10:30 AM Polynesian Storytelling 

Journey through the Pacific Islands through dance, song and story. Audiences will learn about the unique cultural traditions, costumes and instruments of various Polynesian islands on an exciting and immersive musical performance with My Hula Hut. For over 15 years Malia’s Hula Hut has produced Hawaiian & Polynesian shows in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Oklahoma and more!   

11:30 AM Ayurvedic Cooking with Karuna’s Kitchen: Food as Medicine

Join Ayurvedic chef and educator Karuna Diedericks for an engaging, family-friendly introduction to Ayurveda, plant-based nutrition, and food as medicine. In this one-hour session, Karuna will share how traditional Ayurvedic principles can be applied in a modern kitchen to create simple, nourishing, and delicious meals.

Drawing on two decades of teaching Ayurveda and culinary medicine, Karuna will explore the history and philosophy of India’s traditional medicine. She will explain how spices and whole plant foods support digestion and overall wellbeing and demonstrate practical techniques you can use at home. Participants will learn how everyday ingredients—such as lentils, grains, vegetables, and spices—can be combined to create balanced, satisfying, and affordable meals for individuals and families. Tasting samples will be served.

Whether you are completely new to Ayurveda or simply curious about healthier cooking, this session offers an informative introduction to a holistic approach to eating and living well.

12:30 PM Mahjong 101: 

Join us for a meaningful and engaging introduction to Mahjong, a game deeply rooted in Chinese culture with a rich history spanning generations. In this interactive session, guests will explore the cultural origins and evolution of Mahjong, gain a foundational understanding of how the game is played, and experience the joy and connection it brings to communities around the world. This program will include:

A brief cultural and historical overview of Mahjong

A beginner-friendly introduction to tiles, gameplay, and basic rules

A guided open-play experience where participants can see Mahjong in

action and try it themselves

Whether you are brand new or simply curious, this experience is designed to be welcoming, educational, and fun.

Hosted by The Mahj Society, a Fort Bend-based community dedicated to bringing people together through Mahjong, learning, and shared experiences.

1:30 PM The One Studio: K-Pop Dance Performances

The One Dance Studio is a professional dance facility in Houston, Texas, founded in August 2019 by Frida Qu. Frida is a professional Latin dancer who has earned numerous awards in international competitions, including a 4th-place finish at the prestigious Blackpool International Dance Festival in 2019.

1:45 PM Soaring Phoenix Lion Dance Troupe

Soaring Phoenix – CRCT is a Houston-based lion and dragon dance performance group, established in September 2008. We are dedicated to raising cultural awareness and generating funds for impoverished communities worldwide through the traditional Chinese art of lion dancing and dragon dancing. The troupe will perform a traditional lion dance with 8 lions, auspicious mascot, acrobatic floor routine and end it with an auspicious banner drop with confetti.
